Brazilian footwear export was worth $1.09 billion in 2017, reaching more than 150 countries. The primary markets were the US, Argentina, France and Bolivia. Within the GCC, the UAE and Saudi Arabia are the most significant markets followed by Kuwait and Bahrain.
In 2017, Brazil exported 3.3 million pairs worth $29 million to the Middle East. The UAE is the most robust market for the Brazilian brands. The Emirates imported 1.5 million pairs worth $13.4 million, followed by Saudi Arabia accounting for 1.1 million pairs at $7.8 million, Kuwait and Bahrain stood at 0.5 and 0.2 million pairs at $5.7 and $2.1 million, respectively.
The UAE is the 16th leading market for Brazilian footwear exports. Constant expansion of import by the UAE ensures it is a strategic focus market for the Brazilian Footwear programme.
With an aim to further diversify Brazilian footwear brands globally, the Brazilian Footwear Industries Association – Abicalçados runs, among several others, the ‘Brazilian Footwear’ exports promotion programme. This programme, a partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investments Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), aims to promote Brazilian footwear exports.
RetailME will attend the 2018 edition of SICC (Salão Internacional do Couro e do Calçado) that focuses on the spring/summer footwear collections in Gramado, Brazil from May 21-23. Ahead of the event, we spoke to Roberta Ramos, projects manager at Abicalçados about the popularity of Brazilian footwear brands in the GCC.
“While many of our brands have been present in the GCC for a long time, since 2015 we have started focusing on the UAE as a target market. We have been interacting with buyers, learning more about the best brands to promote. Our brands have built an understanding of the UAE and the GCC markets, and they receive an overwhelming welcome by the target audience,” Ramos shares.
Several GCC companies have visited Brazil since 2016 as part of the Brazilian Footwear programme. These include Al Safeer Group, Al Shamsi Holdings, Alshaya Group, KM Trading, Landmark Group’s Shoe Mart and Shoexpress, Apparel Group, Shoe Centre, Quality Group, Lulu Group and Andy Enterprises, to name a few. Some of these retailers have also started stocking Brazilian footwear brands.
