The Dubai Design District (d3) will host ‘UAE Design Stories: The Next Generation from The Emirates’ – an exhibition highlighting some of the brightest Emirati talents, at this year’s Salone Del Mobile International Design Fair, also known as the Milan Design Week.
Supported by the UAE Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, the exhibition, to be held in Milan from April 17–22, is curated by Emirati product designer Khalid Shafar, an accomplished product designer whose works have been widely exhibited in leading exhibitions and galleries across the region and the world. Ten local designers selected by him will showcase their current design pieces, artworks and projects at the exhibition.
The 10 participating Emirati designers include Alia Mazrooei, Aljoud Lootah, Roudha Alshamsi, Zeinab Alhashemi, Latifa Saeed, Azza Al Qubaisi, Alia bin Omair, Salem Al-Mansoori, Abdalla AlMulla and Ahmad AlAreef. And Bader Najeeb, a self-taught home cook, will fuse design and food to create a truly unique culinary experience.
“It’s great to see the UAE Design Stories Exhibition presented by Dubai Design District, take our designers to one of the biggest design fairs of its kind, Salone Del Mobile, and spotlight a selection of some the best Emirati creative talents. The Ministry of Culture supports initiatives like this which go a long way in promoting the rich and diverse culture of the region to international audiences and thereby strategically place Dubai as a centre for culture and creativity,” says Noura Al Kaabi, UAE minister of culture and knowledge development.
“We are delighted to be a part of Salone Del Mobile this year, the largest trade fair of its kind in the world. We are particularly proud to present the works of ten Emirati designers and highlight the design talent here in the UAE. d3 will continue to support, promote and spotlight talent from the region at a local, regional and international level, demonstrating the evolving design scene in the UAE,” adds d3 CEO, Mohammad Saeed Al Shehhi, CEO at d3.
Building on the success of the Middle East Design Now exhibition in 2017 and the Middle East Revealed exhibition held in collaboration with Wallpaper in 2015 in Milan and London, d3’s Milan event will be the first in a series of UAE Design Stories exhibitions. The event will focus on ‘Emirati Landscape: Flora, Fauna and Soil.’ The journey will then move to the London Design Festival in September for the second exhibition entitled ‘Nomadism: Yesterday & Now’ where the same ten designers will display uniquely commissioned pieces. The designers and their commissioned design pieces will return to their home town for the finale of the series of exhibitions that be held as part of Dubai Design Week from November 13-19.
