The Dubai Mall undertakes food waste composting

The Dubai Mall has set a model in urban waste management by facilitating production of 26 tonnes of compost from the waste collected from the mall’s food outlets.

This is the first-of-its-kind initiative by a mall in the UAE and underlines the focus of Emaar Malls to promote environmental-friendly practices that support the UAE’s vision for sustainable development.

The composting is facilitated by the Soft Facilities Management team at The Dubai Mall with the cooperation of the food & beverage outlets in the mall and Suez Middle East Waste Management. All waste from the outlets as well as waste from the mall’s food courts are collected for composting.

The composting is undertaken at Tadweer Composting Plant, which adopts the latest European technology. The compost will be used for landscaping at Emaar’s various integrated lifestyle communities in Dubai.

An expert team of professionals are leading the initiative. The food waste collected daily from the mall is used for composting through a scientifically-managed process. Waste that is deemed unsuitable for composing such as plastics and bottles are segregated.

The food waste composting is one of the many environment-friendly initiatives that is undertaken by The Dubai Mall, and the process is being planned to be expanded to other malls under Emaar Malls shortly.

In other initiatives, The Dubai Mall focuses on managing energy and water use efficiency by using energy-efficient lights and water-flow regulating fixtures. The mall also promotes the recycling of products and has clearly designated bins for separate waste materials including plastic, bottles and general waste.
