Exploring New Horizons

Softlogic Holdings PLC, one of Sri Lanka’s largest conglomerates, has a diverse portfolio spanning retail, telecommunications, healthcare, ICT, automotive, leisure, and financial services. With over 85 companies operating across Sri Lanka, Australia, and Dubai, the group generates more than USD 350 million in turnover. As part of Softlogic’s regional expansion, Softlogic Holding Middle East and Africa, is bringing COCO by Cotton Collection —a brand inspired by global cultures and vintage fashion—to Dubai. We spoke with Ashok Pathirage, Chairman & Managing Director, to discuss his vision for the Middle East.

Tell us about COCO by Cotton Collection and your retail presence in Sri Lanka.
COCO by Cotton Collection is built on blending effortless luxury with a free-spirited vibe. We’ve been in Sri Lanka for 30 years, offering boho-chic fashion for women, men, and kids. Our stores reflect this aesthetic, focusing on breezy silhouettes and vibrant patterns. We’re excited to bring our vision to Dubai, introducing a men’s collection to balance comfort and style for both genders.

Why did you choose Dubai for your expansion?
Dubai is a global fashion hub with a dynamic mix of cultures and a deep appreciation for luxury. This aligns perfectly with COCO’s laid-back luxury ethos. Dubai’s strategic location as a gateway to the MENA region also allows us to tap into international markets, making it the ideal launchpad for our brand’s growth.

What are your growth plans for the UAE and MENA region?
Softlogic is a dominant player in Sri Lanka’s retail sector, with over 19 homegrown brands, more than 120 international brands, and a robust presence in the food and beverage industry. We see immense potential in the UAE and MENA. We plan to establish flagship stores in prime retail spaces and build a strong online presence to reach digital consumers. As part of Softlogic, we are well-positioned to introduce more of our brands, including Odel and a Michelin-star restaurant, offering a complete retail experience.

How will you expand in this region?
Our strategy is multi-faceted. We’ll focus on flagship locations and heavily invest in e-commerce. We’re also tailoring our collections to suit the region’s climate while staying true to COCO’s core identity. Collaborating with regional retail partners and sharing our design expertise will be a key part of growing our presence across the MENA region.

Did you adjust pricing or product lines for this market?
Yes, we adapted both our pricing strategy and product offerings. We’ve introduced pieces that cater to the region’s climate, including breathable fabrics and modest designs. Our men’s collection, in particular, is designed for both comfort and style, perfect for the UAE’s lifestyle.

What is Softlogic’s broader global retail strategy?
We’re focused on expanding our entire portfolio, not just COCO. Softlogic aims to introduce a broader range of brands in the mid-luxury segment, offering accessible luxury across multiple sectors. Our plan includes expanding flagship stores and building a seamless e-commerce experience. Collaboration with regional brands to design their store concept will also play a key role in our global retail strategy, leveraging our expertise to help them realize their retail visions.
