HDE expects spurt in retail sales in Germany
Germany’s retail association HDE is looking optimistically at the final spurt of the Christmas shopping season, expecting particularly many last minute shoppers this year. HDE expects retail sales in the Christmas season – November and December – to total 106.5 billion, representing a 1.2% increase compared with last year. Online sales alone would total EUR10 billion, an 18% increase from last year.
“Christmas Eve falls on a Wednesday this year. This is why we are expecting a high number of last minute shoppers,” says Stefan Genth, managing director of HDE, envisaging a further increase in customer frequency in the next 10 days.
Retail sales of clothes stabilised last week after some difficult weeks because of mild weather, and retailers now hope for more winter-like weather, which would boost the sale of coats, caps and warm shoes. Retailers of entertainment electronics and of food were winners of the past few days, Genth observes.
