IKEA decides to learn and disrupt

March 12, 2019 | By RetailME Bureau

After things like Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS), now there will be Furniture and Kitchen as a Service, with Swedish furniture retailer IKEA’s decision to rent its range of furniture in select regions. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to rent IKEA’s popular range of Billy bookcase, Poäng chair or the Malm bed.

IKEA’s decision is part driven by a difficult 2018 along with its sustainability commitment to the people and planet, to reduce waste and contribute towards being ‘green’.

In addition, IKEA will roll out smaller format stores in 30 cities across the globe, which will mainly be located in urban centres to become more accessible to customers. There will be digitally-enabled kiosks in these stores offering click-and-collect services. IKEA also plans to ramp up its online and delivery services. However, that won’t stop IKEA from building its trademark large stores, the biggest one is set to come up in the Philippines spanning 700,000 sqft.
