Kibsons championing the cause of sustainability
UAE-based grocery delivery platform Kibsons is building environmentally friendly systems and processes to encourage sustainable growing and shopping in the region. Since starting its e-commerce operations in 2016 Kibsons has taken steps as part of its Kibsons Cares initiative to reduce its carbon footprint through the following initiatives.
Electricity consumption is reduced by 25% on average annually at the Kibsons facility which goes up to 50% in winter months. While solar panels cover 130,000 sqft of the roof of its facility.
Kibsons new water recycling plant is on track to recycle more than 75% of the water used to keep the demanding cold storage facility up and running.
Hundred percent of Kibsons organic waste composting plant converts biodegradable waste materials into high-quality organic compost and contributes to reducing carbon footprint towards landfills wherever possible producing half a ton of recycled compost per month. While 90% of plastic and paper is recycled by Kibsons.
The company collects the delivery boxes back from customers’ homes which are then sanitised at the facility and reused to prevent packaging wastage. Customers can request a pick-up of their boxes through the Kibsons app. In fact, Kibsons was the first company in the UAE to swap over to paper-based packaging and enable consumers to choose a ‘no packaging’ delivery option when they shop.
Moreover, to prevent food waste Kibsons offers an ‘ugly but tasty’ range of fruits and vegetables allowing customers to purchase imperfect or nearing-expiration produces at a discounted rate.
“Sustainability is a topic that’s very close to our hearts at Kibsons. Since the inception of Kibsons e-commerce platform we have been striving to give back to the community and implement as many sustainability initiatives as we can within the business to protect the environment in every way we can,” said Halima Jumani, Founder & CEO, Kibsons E-commerce.
