Expo 2020 Dubai, scheduled to kick-off on October 20, 2020, has signed up world-famous footballer Lionel Messi. Through his dazzling skills, Messi will help to spread a message of unity and collaboration via the medium of football in a new short film – https://youtu.be/4ZT63_51nL4 – that kicks off his debut campaign as an Expo 2020 Dubai global ambassador.

The film for Expo 2020 Dubai is created by a team of various nationalities and the music is composed with an Arabic melody and a call for togetherness in African lyrics. As part of the initiative, Expo 2020 will also pass 2,020 durable footballs to children in Jordan, Kenya and the Philippines, totalling 6,060 balls.

The balls represent Expo 2020’s aim to facilitate collaboration and the strengthening of ties within communities, while spreading happiness.

Notably, Messi was appointed as the Expo 2020 global ambassador in 2016, supporting Expo’s goals to leave a lasting impact on the path of human progress, build a better future and commit to positive change. Besides being a world-famous football player, Messi is also well-known for his roles as a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocate and UNICEF (UN Children’s Fund) Goodwill Ambassador.

The first World Expo to take place in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region, Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the future’ embodies collaboration and offers a platform to co-create for the benefit of all. The programmes for Expo 2020 – such as Expo Live, Expo Schools programme and exhibitions from 190 nations – will deliver an optimistic message of unity and collaboration. The challenges the world faces affect everyone and Expo 2020 Dubai seeks to inspire people, partners and nations to come together to create a better future.
