Intersos staff unload relief items to fix damaged houses in the Achrafieh neighbourhood of Beirut. ; On 4 August 2020, a huge explosion caused by ammonium nitrate stored in a port warehouse ripped through Beirut, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. Many people remain missing and more than 300,000 people have had their homes destroyed. The devastation in the neighbourhoods of Gemmayze, Mar Mikhael, and Ashrafieh is overwhelming. UNHCR has responded by making available the in-country stock of shelter kits, plastic sheets, Rubb halls and tens of thousands of relief items. We continue to work with rescue teams and other humanitarian partners to identify victims and extend support to families who have lost loved ones – providing counselling, emergency cash and help with burial arrangements. Lebanon hosts an estimated 1.5 million Syrian refugees, of whom 800,000 are registered. Dozens of refugees died in the blast.
UAE-based community shopping destination, Mercato partners with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), organising donation campaigns under the themes, ‘Stand with Lebanon’ and ‘Yemen can’t wait’.
The campaign, running at Mercato and Town Centre Jumeriah, invites shoppers to meet and interact with UNHCR staff and learn more about the plight of refugees and internally displaced people in Lebanon and Yemen, while providing them with the opportunity to donate on the ground to the cause of their preference.
This awareness and fundraising campaign will allow visitors to the malls the chance to both express their solidarity with those forced to flee from their homes in search of safety and provide financial support that will help displaced families pay for their basic necessities such as rent, food and education with dignity.
As Mercato partners with UNHCR, Nisreen Boustani, PR and corporate communication manager for Mercato and Town Centre Jumeirah said, “Mercato and Town Centre Jumeirah are delighted to play a part in raising donations to support refugees through this unique initiative and we take this opportunity to urge everyone to show their solidarity with the displaced families in Yemen and Lebanon.”
