The number of Saudis working in the Kingdom’s retail and wholesale sector, reportedly, rose 25% at the end of the first quarter of 2019.
According to official figures (as quoted by Arabic daily Al-Eqtisadiah), around 440,000 Saudi men and women are employed in the retail industry, compared to about 330,000 in 2018. While the number of women employees in retail increased by 50,000 to 166,135 from last year, the number of men remained the same at 273,709.
This could be seen as the result of a regulation introduced by the Ministry of Labour and the Human Resource Development Fund in 2018, outlining three stages of Saudization, specifically for the retail sector.
