Retail Sets Sail: How Cruise Tourism is Shaping Shopping Trends in the GCC

March 19, 2025 | By Anurima Das

The intersection of retail and tourism has never been more dynamic than in the cruising industry. With the resurgence of global travel, cruise tourism has emerged as a significant driver of economic growth, directly influencing retail spending in key markets. In the GCC, where luxury shopping and cultural experiences are at the heart of consumer behaviour, the cruise sector is playing a pivotal role in transforming retail landscapes.

Celestyal, a leader in immersive cruise experiences, has made a remarkable entry into the Arabian Gulf, redefining travel and retail engagement for passengers. Lee Haslett, Chief Commercial Officer of Celestyal, shares his insights on how the cruising industry is shaping up post-pandemic, the evolving preferences of travellers, and the retail opportunities embedded in this growth.

How has the cruising industry shaped up since COVID? Has the demand for cruise experiences increased in the new normal?

Cruise tourism serves as a significant catalyst for economic growth, cultural exchange, and social development. It supports livelihoods in local communities, including in rural or remote areas, by showcasing traditions and cultures, with economic contributions from both cruise lines and their guests. A report by the World Travel and Tourism Council forecasted a significant increase in the UAE’s tourism sector’s contribution to the national economy, projecting it to have reached AED 236 billion in 2024, representing 12% of the country’s gross domestic product.

Last year, we entered this market with a completely refreshed fleet, brand, and guest offering. We are renowned for our cruises in the Greek islands and the Mediterranean, but an impressive 86% of our guests told us they would cruise with us again. Our expansion into the GCC highlights how Celestyal is meeting the region’s growing appetite for cruise experiences in the ‘new normal,’ which is surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

We recognize the Arabian Gulf as a dynamic, fast-growing market, with travellers increasingly seeking culturally immersive and premium holiday experiences. Thanks to the commitment of our homeport regions and the incredible support of our customers and travel agent partners, we are now well-positioned to become the go-to cruise specialists for Greece, the Mediterranean, and the Arabian Gulf.

Following Celestyal’s launch in December, what has been the perception of guests? Has there been anything remarkable to take note of?

Our Arabian Gulf itineraries have been very well received. The combination of marquee destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi with more off-the-beaten-track ports like the coastal resort of Khasab and the wildlife haven of Sir Bani Yas Island has attracted travellers eager to explore the UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Bahrain.

Our approach is rooted in understanding the values of this market—travellers in the region tend to favour accessible luxury, authentic experiences, and opportunities to explore destinations rich in culture and heritage. With our mid-sized ships, we can deliver all of this while providing a more personalized and intimate cruise experience that sets us apart from larger vessels. Guest feedback has been exceptional, with many telling us they would be delighted to sail with us again.

Shortly after our inaugural sailing on December 11, 2024, we launched the ‘Live Your Vacation Dream’ campaign, offering savings of up to 50% on our 2025, 2026, and 2027 programs. We’re pleased to say it was met with an overwhelmingly positive response, generating strong booking numbers.

What are the top 3-5 trends that will be a big differentiator in the cruise industry in the next two years?

  1. Authentic Destination Experiences – Cruise travellers are prioritizing immersive experiences, opting to explore lesser-known ports alongside marquee destinations.
  2. Extended Travel Combinations – Many guests are combining their cruises with pre- or post-land stays in major travel hubs.
  3. Value for Money – Competitive pricing and premium experiences are key drivers of cruise selection.
  4. Luxury Suites and Personalization – Guests are increasingly opting for premium accommodations with exclusive perks.
  5. Inclusive Pricing Models – Our CelestyalOne fare includes all essential amenities, providing a seamless, worry-free travel experience.

From ground to water, Celestyal has always focused on customer experience. Does Celestyal have a special loyalty program in place?

While we’re yet to launch a formal loyalty program, our main focus on building loyalty is through exceptional, high-quality experiences at extraordinary value. The high rate of our returning customers and continued expansion across the Arabian Gulf is proof that our current model is attracting both repeat and new-to-brand guests. 86% of our guests tell us they want to return to sail with Celestyal, and with our year-round sailings and winter season GCC program, we’ve given them the options to do so repeatedly.

Customers always demand something extra when it comes to onboard experiences. How do you make it unique and inclusive?

We deliver unforgettable moments at sea and ashore, with an emphasis on immersive, destination-driven experiences. Our ships, Celestyal Journey and Celestyal Discovery, provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while our shore excursions offer travellers a deep dive into local cultures. Our CelestyalOne fare includes dining, beverages, Wi-Fi, entertainment, gratuities, and port fees—ensuring guests enjoy a hassle-free holiday with no hidden costs. Additionally, our CelestyalPay pre-paid credit system allows guests to enhance their experience with specialty dining and premium beverages, offering up to $250 extra credit for those who pre-load spending before their sailing.

Retail and Cruise Tourism: A Symbiotic Growth

Retail is an integral part of the cruise experience, from onboard shopping to destination-driven retail opportunities. As the GCC continues to position itself as a global tourism and retail powerhouse, cruise tourism will play a critical role in shaping the future of retail engagement. Celestyal’s expansion in the Arabian Gulf is not just about offering premium cruise experiences—it is about unlocking new retail avenues, fostering economic growth, and redefining the traveller’s shopping journey.

With travellers seeking unique and immersive experiences, the cruise industry’s influence on retail—both onboard and in port destinations—is set to grow exponentially. Celestyal is at the forefront of this evolution, bringing the best of cruising, culture, and commerce together in one seamless experience.
