Dubai-based, home-grown brand, Sumo Sushi & Bento has announced FranGlobal, one of the leading franchise consultancies in India, as the strategic franchise partner for the restaurant chain within the Indian market. Under this international expansion strategy, Sumo Sushi & Bento will be opening 30 new outlets across major cities in India within the next five years.

As a part of the deal with FranGlobal, the first Sumo Sushi & Bento restaurant is scheduled to be unveiled by January 2020. The franchise partner will also be responsible for delivering the Sumo dining concept in India

“We are excited to expand our retail chain in India. The Sumo support and leadership teams have been working hard on refining the business model,” says Julianne Holt Kailihiwa, CEO, Sumo Sushi & Bento. “We want to ensure that we have a global appeal via our fun and friendly dining experience. Our strategic partnership with FranGlobal is an enduring commitment, and we are looking forward to a long-term association”.

Following the partnership with Apparel group in 2017 for 20 outlets within the GCC market, Sumo Sushi also has plans to enter other popular markets such as the US and Canada. Sumo began its franchising relations in 2006 that has successfully resulted in opening 20 outlets across the GCC region. Other than the international markets, Sumo has plans to open 20 more restaurants in the next five years across the GCC market.

“There’s already awareness, interest and curiosity among Indians around Japanese cuisine, especially fusion oriented food. Understanding this interest, we feel that India will be a reasonably scalable market for Sumo. Also, with our 19 years of experience within the Middle East that boasts a high diaspora of the Indian community, we understand the consumer segment and are ready to expand,” adds Kailihiwa.
